Report from First Day of Shootout, May 10

The Bertram-Hatteras Shootout Tournament began yesterday. There are 35 Hatterases and 26 Bertrams in the tournament. This year, for the first time, all billfish are released. Eleven white marlin, 8 blue marlin, and 2 sailfish were released. The catches are verified by digital pictures, and there is still a lot of money in the calcuttas. The top boats each day get $110,000. The excitement at the dock yesterday afternoon was for the big bluefin tuna that was weighed -- 919 lbs!
